King Kong 18-inch Stop Motion Armature - WIP

There's been a lot of interest in our upcoming Kong armature kit, so I wanted to post an update along with a few images.

Kong is one of my all-time favorites and this armature is really special to a lot of Kong fans. I know that I won't get it 100%, but I'm really trying to get it right. I spend a great deal of time checking and rechecking my work against photos of the original armature - trying to ensure he's as accurate as possible. If I was smart, I would have just reached out to Bob Burns to see if I could take my own photos and measurements. That makes too much sense and besides, I like to make things as difficult for myself as possible. ;-)

Anyway...I still have to refine some of the forms that make up the head. The eyes and teeth still need some tweaking and detailing as well. Once I'm finished with those items, I'll move on to adding the surface textures and details. He won't be anywhere near as polished as he appears in these pics. I also need to finalize the base design and then move on to the engineer bit.

The Pose

I started working out Kong's pose this morning. It's a bit early to be doing this, but I knew I wanted to do a post today and I didn't want to post another screen cap of Kong in a boring T-pose. I'm sure I will tweak it a bit as I continue working, but I think this is pretty close to how the final kit will look. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Articulation

This might be a good time to point out that aside from the jaw, our Kong armature is  NOT going to be articulated. I'm sure this is going to be disappointing for some, but look at the bright side...the price of our resin kit will be a pittance compared to the Sideshow armature which sells for at least $1200 used. No disrespect to Sideshow, but unfortunately, those armatures didn't hold up so well due to the joints failing (see below). I'm trying to avoid having similar issues.

Release Date for Kong

We haven't set a release date or a price at this time, but it shouldn't be much longer. The price will most likely be in line with the rest of our kits. If you want to be notified when the kit is released, you can follow us on social media or sign-up to receive updates. See below for links and sign-up form.

Thanks for looking and don't forget to let us know what you think - either in the comments below or on social.

This looks great, I’m really looking forward for the release of this. The pose looks good in my opinion. Will you be offering a painted version? Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the feedback! I will most likely offer a painted version in the Fall. I have to get caught up on painted Bruce orders first.

Is this based off of Long Face, or Round Face?

This is the Round Face armature. I started doing the long face version and changed my mind after I was about half-way finished. I will probably finish the Long Face armature as a companion (if there is enough demand). They would look pretty cool on display together.

Hi David, up to your usual high standard of work, he looks amazing & I really fancy one for myself, I am lucky enough to own the sideshow version but it doesn't stay upright only with the help of clear rods, so it would be nice to box him up & have a far more manageable display piece which looks like a worthy successor.

Hi Alan!

Thanks so much! I'll do my best to make it a "worthy successor!" :-)
